Shipshewana Checker Tournament
Saturday, March 19th  2011

Greetings Indiana (or nearby) checker players,

I have been notified of a checker get-together to be held in the Shipshewana area Saturday, March 19th, 2011, starting at 9 a.m.  The players will be mostly Amish men.  They are pretty serious players and use the 3-move opening cards. Anyone who might like to try your hand at some good checkers on Saturday, please answer this e-mail by Friday or call me at (574) 257-9033.  Maybe we can share a ride there.

Roger Blaine sent me an email telling me he got word from Kenny Miller.  Here's the email:

Dear Checker fans,

The checker get-together had to be cancelled in January, but I just heard from Kenny Miller that they have now scheduled it for Saturday, March 19, 9:00 a.m., at the home of Pete Schmucker, near Shipshewana, Lagrange County, Indiana. Kenny told me, "bring some friends along!"

Please contact me if you would like to go and test your skill against the Amish men!

Cheers,
Roger Blaine  574-257-9033 or  reblaine@hotmail.com

I got this letter from Kenny Miller about the Mar. 19 checker gathering: "We just played mostly Indiana players against Ohio players. The Ohio players didn't play each other. Some players probably played 3 more rounds than others. At the end of the day we didn't really compare how we came out." So it was a good friendly meet without record-keeping. I went over for an hour or so and sold several checkerboards, and got soundly beaten twice by Harley Hochstetler.  Regards, Roger
